Art - Poem - I See His Blood Upon the Rose

We resonate with the beauty of the world around us, even if we can't quite put it in words…but when the eternal Word speaks refreshing life to our souls, our eyes open to His voice of creation, expansive and exquisite. This new perspective fuels a new love for Christ and invites us to see Him everywhere - even though we have never been away from Him:

  • If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me” (Psalm 139:8-10, KJV).

  • “Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:2-3).

God is everywhere…and Joseph Mary Plunkett (1887-1916) alludes to God’s life-giving omnipresence in his poem, “I See His Blood Upon the Rose”:

I see his blood upon the rose

And in the stars the glory of his eyes,

His body gleams amid eternal snows,

His tears fall from the skies.

I see his face in every flower;

The thunder and the singing of the birds

Are but his voice—and carven by his power

Rocks are his written words.

All pathways by his feet are worn,

His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea,

His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn,

His cross is every tree.
